Abi Hood is a San Diego based artist, director, and educator who primarily enjoys art that explores autonomy, absolution, and divine femininity.

As a director, Abi has worked on a range of productions that display her education in movement, intimacy, and devised practices. She loves new works and creating collaborative environments full of honesty, passion, and community. She inquires into how a play can look as it feels, often using the term “brain pictures” to describe her process in creating tableaus onstage. She encourages her actors to play and explore within the limitless possibilities of boundaries. More specifically, she enjoys a good challenge.

As an artist, Abi has varied training in acting, movement, and mask making. She has her B.A. degree in Theatre from UC San Diego where she spent a majority of her time acting and directing. There she also learned from peers and professors such as Stephen Buescher (movement and mask technique), Rosie Glen-Lambert (directing and acting), and Julie Burelle (theatre history). She expanded on her training in mask making and technique during her intensive with Tony Fuemmeler at Dell’Arte International - School Of Physical Theatre.

As an educator, she loves working with children and adults alike and believes that humans never stop growing, learning, and changing. She also has extensive training in building and facilitating curriculum. During her time at UC San Diego, she served as Company 157’s Education and Outreach Director and post-grad, was the San Diego Education Coordinator for Character Kids. She has worked as an theatre teacher with companies such as: La Jolla Playhouse, Playwrights Project, and Blindspot Co.

“After getting my B.A. in Theatre from UC San Diego, I planted roots and got to work. I am, first and foremost, dedicated to creating space and opportunity for local emerging artists. We deserve to fail, create, and grow and be respected for trying. As an emerging artist myself, I have experienced the lack of resources and opportunity for young artists to hone their skills independently. There needs to be more inter-generational support for emerging artists but it’s also time we stood on our own two feet made way for ourselves. As a founding member of Boy King Theatre Collective, that is exactly what we intend to do!”
